Ambassador for Peace: Simon Shaheen

Simon Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musician, performer and composer of his generation. His work incorporates the legacy of Arabic music, whilst simultaneously exploring new frontiers and integrating different musical styles into his process. He was honored with the prestigious National Heritage Award in 1994.

Since the 1990s, Shaheen has released four albums: Saltanah (Water Lily Acoustics), Turath (CMP), Taqasim (Lyrichord) and Simon Shaheen: The Music of Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Axiom). He has also collaborated with producer Bill Laswell in his fushion collective, Hallucination Engine (Island), and contributed selected soundtracts to the albums The Sheltering Sky and Malcolm X, amongst others. He composed the soundtrack for the United Nations sponsored documentary, For Everyone Everywhere, which was broadcasted globally in December 1998 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Declarations of Human Rights. Shaheen, as the lead of his musical group, has also produced Blue Flame (ARK21, 2001), which was nominated for eleven Grammy Awards.

A Palestinian born in the village of Tarshiha in the Galilee, Shaheen's childhood has always been consumed by his passion for music. His father, Hikmat Shaheen, was a professor of music and a master 'oud player. Shaheen began [;aying the 'oud at the age of five and studied the violin at the Connservatory for Western Classical Music in Jerusalem, but he never forgot his roots; "Learning to play the 'oud from my father was the most powerful influence in my musical life, and when I held and played these instruments, they felt like an extension of my arms."
