UN
Women entity established:
On 2 July, in a historic moment, the UN General
Assembly voted unanimously for the establishment of the UN Entity for Gender
Equality and Empowerment, to be known as “UN Women.” The resolution that
establishes the new entity is part of a larger resolution on System-wide
Coherence (A/64/L.56) and is the result of years of negotiations between UN
Member States and active advocacy of women’s groups and civil society. With the
establishment of UN Women, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said the world has
entered “a new era in the UN’s work for women.” The new entity, which will
be operational by January 2011, will consolidate the four existing gender
entities – the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW); the International
Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW); the
Office of the Special Adviser for Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI);
and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) – into one in order
to ensure stronger coherence and coordination at all levels and to bring
together resources and mandates for greater impact. A transition period started
upon adoption of the resolution and will continue until 31 December 2010.
Dubai, May 31, 2011: Dubai
chapter organized a meeting on Sunday 3 May 2011
at the University of Wollongong in Dubai to hear about the USFMEP and
watch a power point presentation prepared by Ralph Kader. Participants
came from all sectors of life in Dubai; students, full time workers, part time
office workers, mums and dads. After the presentation myself and Vijaya
Nair who co-hosted the session with me, asked people what had sparked their
interest and in what way they would like to become involved. We had an
interesting discussion about how people view the issue of personal peace and how
that plays out in the world. By the end of the meeting we had a list of people
who were interested in staying involved in some way and who volunteered to begin
planning a one day workshop for interested friends and relatives on the issue of
Peace in the Middle East. However a number of people paid their
membership fee and joined the US Federation for Middle East Peace
Organization (USFMEP)
and some direct contact with USFMEP New York seeking volunteer or
internship opportunities were made. It is small steps so far in getting a group
organized in Dubai but those who attended the meeting had lots of enthusiasm we
can tap.
