The International Day of Peace
September 21, 2010 will be held in New York City.
UN
Women entity established:
On 2 July, in a historic moment, the UN General
Assembly voted unanimously for the establishment of the UN Entity for Gender
Equality and Empowerment, to be known as “UN Women.” The resolution that
establishes the new entity is part of a larger resolution on System-wide
Coherence (A/64/L.56) and is the result of years of negotiations between UN
Member States and active advocacy of women’s groups and civil society. With the
establishment of UN Women, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world has
entered “a new era in the UN’s work for women.”
The new entity, which will be
operational by January 2011, will consolidate the four existing gender entities
– the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW); the International Research
and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW); the Office of the
Special Adviser for Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI); and the
United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) – into one in order to ensure
stronger coherence and coordination at all levels and to bring together
resources and mandates for greater impact. A transition period started upon
adoption of the resolution and will continue until 31 December 2010.

New Appointment
M rs. Christina Richards
appointed by the USFMEP
President Mrs. Salwa Kader; UAE Office Director to
coordinate the Organization work between the
USFMEP office at United Nations in
New York and UAE Chapter. She is a consultant to government and private sector
agencies and coaches individuals in the UAE in problem solving
workplace and
personal challenges. She is the former Chief Executive Officer of The Australian
Reproductive Health Alliance (ARHA) and Secretariat Chair of the Australian All
Party Parliamentary Group on Population and Development (PGPD). USFMEP Board and
members welcome her appointment.
Mrs. Yaga C.
Gonzalez, born in Paris to
a Senegalese
father and a Syrian-born Turkish mother. I lived the
Middle East with my Diplomat father, I was brought to
witness
the hopes and deceptions for a region that has grown and developed in the shadow
of conflicts and to experience it's culture, traditions,
religions,
and
society during the eight years I lived there. This experience has helped
me develop a better understanding of the views that are being held by various
parties. Decades of distrust are at the origin; through education and dialog,
fears can gradually fade, giving a place the acknowledgment and respect of
difference.
USFMEP Board and members welcome her appointment as the director of Geneva
office.
